"The botched execution of Clayton Lockett, 38, on April 29, 2014 shows that the debate over whether the controversial drugs now used for lethal injections in Oklahoma cause extreme and unconstitutional suffering is no longer theoretical. Governor Mary Fallin has rightly called for an investigation into the incident and provided a stay of execution for Charles Warner, the other person to be put to death last Tuesday in the State’s first scheduled double execution since 1937.

Both men committed horrific crimes. There is no argument that justice needs to be served appropriately and that society needs to be protected. But this can be achieved by means other than capital punishment.

Last year, the bishops and other heads of the member churches of the Oklahoma Conference of Churches unanimously called on the Oklahoma Legislature to abolish the death penalty. This has already been done by eighteen other states in the USA and by hundreds of countries worldwide.

Capital punishment is unnecessary and unwarranted because it does not fulfill the claims its proponents make. It is not a deterrent preventing future horrific crimes. It does not often bring hoped-for “closure” to the families of victims. It may, temporarily, satisfy our outrage and desire for revenge, but that, in a civilized society, is not a good enough reason to put people to death—even legally.

What happened to Clayton Lockett on Tuesday evening will, hopefully, lead to the abolition of capital punishment altogether in this state, making his the last execution in Oklahoma."
