BREAKING NEWS: Death Penalty Repeal Advances in Two Key States

Lawmakers in Delaware and Kansas have announced their intentions to move forward with death penalty repeal legislation early in 2016. This is more evidence of national momentum away from capital punishment in the U.S.

The Delaware Repeal Bill, SB40 is scheduled to be considered on the House floor this Thursday, January 28th. A broad coalition of civil and human rights organizations and religious leaders spanning the political spectrum is mobilizing in support.

In Kansas a group of 17 legislators, led by former judge, Representative Steven Becker introduced a bill in the Kansas House of Representatives that would end the death penalty in that state. The 11 Republicans and 6 Democrats who co-sponsored Bill 2515 will be holding a press conference urging passage of the measure at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 28th in the Second Floor Capitol Rotunda. They will be joined by recent exoneree, Floyd Bledsoe, who will speak about the risk of executing an innocent person.

If you have not already done so, take the pledge today to get involved in ending the death penalty. If you live in Delaware or Kansas please make sure your lawmaker knows that you stand on the side of abolition! If you know people in either state, please urge them to contact their lawmakers and go to the capitol to make their voices heard.

I will be joining our colleagues in Delaware along with other national civil rights and religious leaders to support the local grassroots efforts and urge lawmakers to stand with us on the right side of history.

In peace and solidarity,

Diann
