Guest Post from Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty
On May 21st, Missouri is scheduled to have the first execution since Clayton Lockett’s horrifying botched execution in April.
Like Lockett, Russell Bucklew’s execution is shrouded in secrecy. Missouri is concealing its intended drug supplier and will not provide information on whether drugs have been tested for purity in advance of executions. While the rest of the nation is moving away from the death penalty because of concerns about innocence, cost and cruelty, Missouri is on pace for a record number of executions this year.
Bucklew has a vascular condition called cavernous hemangioma, which medical experts warn greatly increases the risk of a painful botched execution in this instance. The state’s refusal to address Bucklew’s vascular condition and the risks it brings is indicative of the state’s single-minded pursuit of executions.
