On Wednesday, Russell Bucklew is scheduled to be the first person executed since Clayton Lockett’s tragic botched execution in Oklahoma.
Mr. Bucklew suffers from a rare and serious condition known as cavernous hemangioma, which causes clumps of weak, malformed blood vessels to grow in his face, head, neck and throat.
As a result of his well-documented condition, which has also partially obstructed his airway, Mr. Bucklew is likely to hemorrhage and choke during his execution.
What happened in Oklahoma is not an isolated incident. We have seen time and again how the death penalty fails us. It’s time for change. Sign on today to halt all executions nationwide.
Mr. Bucklew’s attorneys state that he cannot be executed under Missouri’s lethal injection protocol without inflicting cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment. Similar to Oklahoma, Missouri officials have shrouded their lethal injection process in secrecy. The botched execution of Clayton Lockett in Oklahoma last month underscores the need for transparency.
No executions should go forward in this climate of secrecy. Enough is enough.
We have watched the Constitution get trampled. We have seen new data come out every month: 1 in 25 inmates on death row is innocent; support for the death penalty in this country is at an all-time low; racial bias influences juries in death penalty cases; and the list goes on.
The 90 million people who oppose the death penalty are outraged, organized, and ready to fight to halt all executions nationwide.
This is urgent, and the consequences are dire. Sign on today to halt all executions nationwide.
