Four Decades of NCADP Advocacy: What’s Next?

The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty has been around since the national moratorium on capital punishment was lifted in 1976 via the United States Supreme Court decision in Gregg v. Georgia. In reflecting on our organization's 40 year anniversary, we are proud to say that, in that time, we have made tremendous progress in helping abolish the death penalty in a multidude of states including New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Illinois, New Jersey, and New Mexico over just the past 10 years.

However, there is still much work to be done in order to accomplish our final goal of national abolition. You can check out our interactive map to see where change is still necessary. In addition, below is a list of the states that still have functioning death penalty laws, or their remnants, ranked in order of how many death row inmates they have today - in other words, this is a list of abolitionist priorities.
