“Tonight, we learned that yet another American has been put to death in a shocking and cruel way. But the worst part about Joseph Wood’s botched execution was, it was entirely predictable and avoidable. The combination of drugs used in putting Wood to death—an agonizing, two hour ordeal—has been used only once before, earlier this year in Ohio, resulting in another botched execution.
“Americans have had enough of the barbarism. Capital punishment is a brutal and brutalizing, ineffective and practice which undermines commitment to fairness and the rule of law. The events in Arizona are yet another example of how the broken death penalty system is. It risks executing innocent people every day it’s in place. It is incapable of functioning properly.
“That’s why a growing number of us—more than 90 million Americans— oppose the death penalty, a number that has grown significantly in recent years.
“Tonight, the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty renews our call to halt all executions, and call on everyone who’s shocked and appalled by this news to join our campaign that finally puts an end to this terrible procedure.”
