The Word - Silent But Deadly

[Capital punishment] sends a clear message: We as a society think it’s depraved to take a human life, and to prove it, we’re going to kill you.” –Stephen Colbert

Last week, late night funnyman Stephen Colbert took on the death penalty and new developments in execution drug secrecy in his daily segment “The Word.” In “Silent But Deadly,” his word(s) of the day, he explores recent legislation in Tennessee that allows the state to withhold death penalty related information from the public, including what drugs they’re using in executions and where they acquired them. “These substitute execution drugs have made capital punishment appear unusually cruel,” says Colbert, citing recent a execution in Oklahoma where the inmate’s final words were “I feel my whole body burning.”
