Message from the Executive Director
Dear Colleagues:
It is no longer a question of whether or not we will end the death penalty, but when. In every policy arena that carefully studies the matter, momentum is decidedly in the direction of repeal. There is consensus that the system needs reform. Death penalty supporters are approving measures to narrow the scope and reach of the death penalty and to address concerns about racial bias. Murder victims’ families—some who support the practice as well as those who oppose—are joining forces to highlight the different ways the death penalty does not work for them. Combined, these great waves lead us to gather in Chicago for the NCADP 2011 Annual Conference.
Our momentum is due in large part to the citizen empowerment that NCADP and our Affiliates are building together—broadening the discussion to include all stakeholders and a deeper understanding of policies that work. We invite you to join organizations and individuals committed to making a difference in our communities—making them safer and enhancing our response to and support of victims’ families.
By joining almost five hundred abolitionist leaders and activists in Chicago, you will: refresh your knowledge of the basics of building a policy campaign; learn the latest in policy developments on the issue; and help to define and refine strategies for keeping communities safer, supporting families of victims, and holding offenders accountable. You will meet and network with counterparts from across the country and the political spectrum. And, your spirits will be lifted at the conference awards dinner as we recognize individuals for their selfless and passionate commitment to the struggle.
The conference program includes presentations of substantive information, practical tools, and innovative ideas from research and personal experience. Affiliate board members will receive an orientation to and training in Affiliate work that lays the groundwork for future progress. Affiliate staff will be introduced to new ideas and advanced skills training. New volunteers and local members will be exposed to the basics and have the opportunity to network with seasoned advocates.
NCADP is helping to end the death penalty—we are building the momentum for repeal.
