BREAKING NEWS: Utah has been pushing for repeal of the death penalty in their legislature. On March 2, 2016, the Senate voted 15-12 (with two abstentions) to repeal the death penalty.
Utah state Sen. Steve Urquhart (R) sponsored the bill SB189. It is still not clear what will happen to the bill when it moves to the state House or, if it passes that chamber, makes it to Gov. Gary R. Herbert (R). The Governor supports capital punishment and signed a bill last year expanding use of the firing squad.
We wish to congratulate Utah on this exciting progress and hope this continues in the House.
