By a vote of 32-15, Nebraska lawmakers gave final approval to LB 268, the bill that would abolish the death penalty in the state. The 32 votes are currently enough to override a potential veto from Republican Governor Pete Ricketts if necessary.
The Associated Press reports:
If that vote holds in a veto override, Nebraska would become the first conservative state to repeal the death penalty since North Dakota in 1973.The Nebraska vote is notable in the national debate over capital punishment because it was bolstered by conservatives who oppose the death penalty for religious reasons and say it is a waste of taxpayer money.Nebraska hasn't executed a prisoner since 1997, and some lawmakers have argued that constant legal challenges will prevent the state from doing so again.
Be sure to follow Nebraskans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty for additional local developments on the repeal bill.
The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty has created the 90 Million Strong Campaign to unite the voices of those who believe the death penalty is wrong. We need to demonstrate that the broad public support to end this practice is already here in America, and 90 million people speaking up can make a difference.
