Today, the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty renewed its call for a halt to all executions nationwide, in response to this week’s new findings by a medical expert indicating that an Ohio prisoner was conscious and likely suffered a prolonged and lingering death during a lethal injection in January.

Tonight, we learned that yet another American has been put to death in a shocking and cruel way. But the worst part about Joseph Wood’s botched execution was, it was entirely predictable and avoidable. The combination of drugs used in putting Wood to death—an agonizing, two hour ordeal—has been used only once before, earlier this year in Ohio, resulting in another botched execution.

Tonight the state of Georgia executed Marcus Wellons. This was the first execution since the botched execution of Clayton Lockett in Oklahoma at the end of April and distinguishes the state as an outlier. Georgia courts have upheld the practice of secrecy surrounding Mr. Wellon’s executions and others. The secrecy problem has been one of a number underlying a national call for a halt to all executions.

The execution of John Winfield is scheduled for shortly after midnight tonight. A panel of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals has granted Mr. Winfield a stay of execution, however, the state of Missouri is appealing for a decision by the full court. In addition to the appeals process, Mr. Winfield’s lawyers, along with a diverse coalition of voices, including the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty and Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, are calling on Governor Nixon to grant Mr. Winfield clemency.

Tomorrow the state of Oklahoma has set a double execution for Charles Warner and Clayton Lockett after an extended legal and political tussle around the constitutionality of the state’s lethal injection procedure that still has not been adequately resolved.

Today New Hampshire set itself on the course to become the seventh state to do away with the death penalty in seven years when the House of Representatives voted 225-104 in favor of House Bill 1170. “The vote today in New Hampshire shows just how far we have come nationally in our thinking about the death penalty,” stated Diann Rust-Tierney, Executive Director of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.
